AKESHINO was established in order to preserve, convey and spread Okinawa’s only tea ceremony. Bukubuku-cha is made by brewing roasted brown rice in Okinawa’s hard mineral-rich water, which creates a rich white foam on top of the tea.
Historically, the tea, served with the foam, was presented to Chinese envoys known as Sapposhi. The tea ceremony is not only performed on request by AKESHINO, but also as part of a stage performance with other performers of traditional Okinawan performing arts. As part of the Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival, they also travel to promote the tradition in countries such as American and Chinese culture.
