Iriyuji- Gama, where local residents took refuge during the war. Unfortunately, a large quantity of trash has been abandoned in this Gama that saved people's lives. While it is a place of considerable significance to pass on the history of the Battle of Okinawa to future generations, for those who have experienced the war, the Gama is a place of remembrance. Through this experience, we will discuss the possible "future use" of the Gama in the aftermath of earthquakes and other disasters.
[Entering the Gama]
In addition to sheltering residents, Iriyuji- Gama was also used to store documents from the town hall. The residents who took refuge in this Gama were not killed in the battle, and their lives were saved.
[Clearing trash from the Gama]
The Gama is used as a place for peace education to pass on the history of the Battle of Okinawa to future generations. On the other hand, for those who have lived through it, the Gama is a place of remembering the war. After the war, many Gama turned into local garbage dumps. There is still a lot of trash left behind in Iriyuji- Gama.
[Discussions on the state of the remains]
We will introduce the opinions of the residents, and discuss “how to preserve the Gama” during the Group Work. Learn about some of the issues faced by both urban development and peace education, such as "Who is going to manage it?" and "Will visitors be a nuisance?", and discuss how the archeological remains of the Gama can be utilized.
